Travelogue: An Artist's
Journey
Robin Ann Walker's Trip to
Eastern Europe, October 2003 - Page 8. |
October 9, 2003
After the beautiful clear day we had yesterday, I was
surprised to wake up to SNOW! This really exemplifies how isolated we were,
not only by location, but language. We didn't have the luxury of listening
to a weather report, so we were taken by surprise. |

I blasted outside as soon as I saw the flakes from my bedroom
window. I was yelling and laughing - because I am from Texas after all, This
was a real treat for me. Those people from more northern areas preferred to
sleep later than this (about 7:00 am). |

This is my footprint - there were about 8 inches of snow,
except where it drifted. I stepped into a really deep patch that made me
swing my arms to keep balanced, and I laughed out loud! |
|

Earliest morning, the snow is still falling |

Good day to stay inside and paint, but of course I can't - I
have to go outside! This is the painting I started in Niki's room. It's me
and the mountain is my skirt. What a scene outside the window! |

Carol had picked some apples, and today she's making
applesauce. A lovely treat! |
|

The village looks even more idyllic under a blanket of fresh
snow. Later in the day we could see smoke wafting up from chimneys. |

I have been mesmerized by the landscape here - and I didn't
think it could get any better - until today. |

Me - taking a picture of myself. Not everyone wanted to
constantly run outside. It was SO COLD! That's my warmest wool sweater, over
three other layers of clothes. |
|

The sky cleared for a bit, and really showed off the contrast
of colors all around us. |

This day was spent painting and running outside and taking
pictures. It was so beautiful I wanted to capture every moment to hold
forever. |

Then came what we had been waiting days for - the full moon.
It came up orange and fat, right over the snow-filled valley. We were in the
studio having happy hour when Bill saw it. We turned off the lights and
reveled in the scene. I'm sure none of us will ever forget that moment.

Zdravko came for dinner tonight - and when he
left, again, it was snowing. The silence was so complete that you could hear
the huge wet flakes hit the ground.
|
We are getting comfortable
with each other. After dinner, we change chairs, talking and laughing. As
the night goes on, we are dancing to old American music. Afterwards, when I
am bundled up in bed, I wonder how I can ever sleep knowing it's snowing
outside. |
