Travelogue: An Artist's Journey

Robin Ann Walker's Trip to Eastern Europe, October 2003 - Page 6.

October 6, 2003

Rain day!  Since we have had lovely weather up to now, we are happy to have a change. It's cold and we are all layered up in clothes since there's no heat in the hotel. This is the painting studio, and we have lined up easels in front of the windows to paint the scene before us. It's just like plein air, but inside!

The clouds broke in the afternoon and it was wet and luscious outside. The air is so clean and the altitude so high - it's as though this is the birthplace of the earth.

The sun lights up the late afternoon sky.

As an added bonus on rain day - we go to town! This is Shiroka Laka. Amazingly, it had an internet "club" with 4 computers, and this was the first time I was able to contact anyone. I also bought a phone card and called home. It cost $7.50 for 3 minutes.

The shopkeeper where we bought the phone cards, and candles. He was excited to hear we were Westerners. He's a geography teacher and he gave us a history lesson while we were there (through our translator Momchil). There were five of us in the shop, and it was full.

What better way to end the day - a clear blue sky, and an almost-full moon, with Mars directly overhead. It's lost in this small picture, but you can imagine.....

The night wasn't over. We had the most delicious meal for dinner, a mushroom and chicken omelet. I ate the whole thing. And for some reason, we were a rowdy group after dinner. I was infused with rhythm, something I don't ordinarily have much of. We danced for hours!

Nancy and Niki on the "dance floor". I had trouble sleeping this night.  Later, I discovered that most of us didn't sleep - and we wondered if maybe the mushrooms were "magic"!
