Travelogue: An Artist's Journey

Robin Ann Walker's Trip to Eastern Europe, October 2003 - Page 12.

October 13, 2003

Our last day in Gela. I am frantically taking pictures, well aware that this experience will never be repeated. I want to document everything.

These are my paintings.

Judy's paintings - she did a few more that I don't have pictures of.

A popular scene for all of us, the village below the hotel. This one by Judy.

Peter's painting of the Magic Spring

Some of Carol's finished paintings

These are Nasco's paintings "in progress". He was quick to tell me that they are not finished at this point. The one above right is of the church that was so often photographed and sketched.

Three of Nancy's paintings. The one on the right is the village scene most of us painted.

Nancy's plein air painting easel and her travel paintings. She vowed to do a painting a day in this format. Some of these are studies for larger paintings she will complete in her home studio.

Bill's painting of the village, in watercolor.

Bill painted the church, too.

Anna, her portrait of Nasco, and Nasco. She'll have to finish this in London (her home).

Michelle's painting from one of Valeri's photos of the Black Sea. She did several others, but I didn't get good photos.

We are all packing, but MIchelle is putting last minute touches on her cow portrait. Several of us join in and add our special brushmarks to it before somebody gets a nail and hangs it in the hotel lobby. The only piece of art in the hotel, and a constant reminder to the staff of our presence in Gela.

Anna's landscapes in her classical style.

These brightly colored symbolic paintings were a surprise. They came from the painter we rarely saw, Kay.

This is more Niki's personal style. It is the gorge we visited, with an overlay of the shape of a woman's body. Beautiful!

Niki paints the village.

Valeri paints the gorge. He has included the classical story of Orpheus, who is seen in profile on the right side of the painting.

Valeri's painting of the woman from Gela. He researched local dress, and took the background from the pattern of the blankets on our beds.

Valeri helps us pack our paintings.

It's Bill's birthday! Stevka signs the "artist-made" card, with Carol and Nancy.

Valeri, me, and Momchil, right before getting in the van to head down the mountains to Plovdiv.
