Travelogue: An Artist's Journey

Robin Ann Walker's Trip to Eastern Europe, October 2003 - Page 11.

October 12, 2003

Hot "smilka" (fresh milk) for coffee this morning! Since we don't get it very often, and I love it, I'm so happy when it shows up on the table for breakfast.

Salami and cheese for breakfast. I order eggs (again) and give my salami to Peter.

Returning from the spring, I came around the back of the building to find our chef (left) and his assistant putting the sheep on the barbecue. Peter, the assistant, sat there all day manually turning the spit and basting.

The party room is ready for us. We haven't been in this room before, and are happy to see the fireplace (for warmth!). Zdravko is coming to host our goodbye party.

The party is well underway - as you can tell by the "shopska" salad and all the bottles on the table!

Zdavko arranged for this musician to play native Bulgarian music on his sheepskin pipe organ. His clothes are heavy felt.

This young man was a singer and accompanied the bagpipe player. Sometimes all the Bulgarians would sing along.

The Bulgarians taught us a local dance step.

Kalina and Nancy sample the recently demised sheep.

The party lasted for 8 hours, with much toasting, drinking, and singing of Bulgarian and American songs. We were good at the choruses, but not much else.

Valeri ends the party in song.

Nasco brings his paintings into the studio.

Valeri and Zdravko go to the studio, where Zdravko chooses the paintings he will keep for his collection. He picks one or two from each of us.

Our time in Gela has almost run out. We leave tomorrow.
